A chip specification that only names a colour will be substituted. Here is what to write instead.
Write the grade into the spec
Name the size band, the colour, the matrix, the packing and any washing or drying requirement. A spec that says 'white marble chips' leaves every meaningful variable open to substitution during procurement.
Sample the finished condition
Approve a ground and polished sample panel, not loose material. Retain it on site. Photographs and screen renders consistently misrepresent how aggregate reads at floor scale.
Design for batch reality
Natural stone varies between batches. Where a continuous surface matters, either secure the whole quantity in one lot or design a break — a border, a movement joint, a change of field — where a tonal shift can be absorbed.
Coordinate with the trades early
Topping thickness, grinding depth and mix design all constrain the chip grade. Bringing the flooring contractor into the material conversation early avoids a late redesign.
