Marble Chips Quantity Calculator
Enter the area you are covering and the depth of the chip layer to estimate the volume and approximate weight of marble chips required. Results are estimates only.
Estimated requirement
- Area
- 15.00 m²
- Approximate volume
- 0.750 m³
- Approximate quantity
- 1.13 tonnes (1125 kg)
- With 10% allowance
- 1.24 tonnes
Results are estimates. Actual consumption depends on compaction, chip size, wastage and the application. Confirm the final quantity with your contractor before ordering.

How the calculation works
Volume equals length × width × depth, with all measurements converted to metres. Weight is that volume multiplied by the bulk density of the material. Feet are converted at 0.3048 metres per foot and depth is entered in millimetres for convenience.
Choosing the right grade for the depth
Depth and chip size should suit each other. A 20 mm layer of 20-40 mm chips is barely one stone deep and will not cover properly. For shallow layers, use 8-10 mm or finer. See the quantity guide for worked examples.
Calculator FAQs
- How accurate is this calculator?
- It gives an estimate of volume and approximate weight. Actual consumption depends on compaction, chip size, wastage and how the material is laid.
- What density should I use?
- Loose marble chips commonly sit around 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre. Coarser grades pack looser and finer grades pack tighter, so adjust the setting if you know your material.
- What depth should I choose?
- Around 40-50 mm for decorative beds and paths, 20-30 mm for planter topping, and more for driveways over a compacted sub-base.
- Should I order extra?
- Yes. A margin of roughly ten percent covers settlement, spillage and the top-up most areas need after the first season.
