The basic calculation
Volume equals length times width times depth, all in the same units. For a 5 m by 3 m bed at 50 mm depth: 5 × 3 × 0.05 = 0.75 cubic metres.
To convert volume to weight, multiply by the bulk density of the material. Loose marble chips typically sit in the region of 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre, though this varies with chip size and how tightly the material packs.
Choosing a depth
Decorative beds: 40-50 mm. Paths: 40-50 mm over a firm base. Planter topping: 20-30 mm. Driveways: more, and over a properly built sub-base. Thinner layers show the membrane through and suppress weeds poorly.
Allowances to add
Add a margin for settlement, spillage and the top-up you will want after the first season. Ten percent is a reasonable starting point for a simple rectangular area, more for irregular shapes with a lot of edge cutting.
