Marble Chips Sizes Explained

Fine grades: under 3 mm

Below 3 mm, individual chips stop being visible as stones and start behaving as texture. These grades are used as filler inside terrazzo mixes, in textured wall plasters, and as the aggregate in thin epoxy and resin floor systems where build thickness is limited.

If you want a floor that reads as a smooth, quiet field rather than a chip pattern, this is the range to specify.

Medium grades: 3 mm to 8 mm

This is the terrazzo and mosaic working range. 3-6 mm is by far the most commonly specified chip size in India, giving a clearly readable chip pattern in a normal topping thickness. 5-8 mm and 6-8 mm push the pattern larger and more graphic.

Medium grades also work for planter topping and small decorative areas, though they are a little fine for open garden beds.

Coarse grades: 8 mm and above

From 8-10 mm upward, chips are used loose. 8-10 mm is the general-purpose decorative landscaping size. 10-20 mm interlocks well and is the usual choice for walked paths. 20-40 mm handles light vehicle traffic and reads clearly across large sites.

As chips get larger, they stay in place better but become less comfortable underfoot, so match the grade to how the surface will actually be used.

A note on tolerance

Graded stone always contains some material slightly outside its nominal band. Any specification that assumes machined precision will be disappointed. Where a tight grading matters — precast panels, repeated production runs — say so when you enquire so the requirement can be discussed before dispatch.
