What Are Marble Chips?

Last reviewed 2026-02-10 · MarbleChips.in product team

A plain explanation of what marble chips are, how they are graded, and where they are used in Indian construction.

The short answer

Marble chips are pieces of natural marble that have been crushed and screened into defined size ranges. They are sold by size band — 3-6 mm, 8-10 mm, 10-20 mm and so on — and by colour, and they are used as a decorative aggregate rather than as a structural material.

The same material shows up under several names: marble aggregate, marble stone chips, crushed marble and terrazzo chips all describe broadly the same product.

How marble chips are graded

Chips are screened rather than machined, so a size band describes the sieve range the material passed through, not an exact dimension. A 8-10 mm batch will contain some pieces slightly outside that band. This is normal for crushed stone and is worth allowing for in any specification.

Fine grades below 3 mm behave like a coarse sand and are used inside mixes. Medium grades between 3 mm and 8 mm are the terrazzo and mosaic working range. Coarse grades from 8 mm upward are used loose, in beds, paths and driveways.

Where marble chips are used

Terrazzo and mosaic flooring account for the largest share of use in India. The chips are cast into a cement or resin matrix and then ground back so the stone becomes the wearing surface.

In landscaping, chips are laid loose over a membrane as decorative ground cover. In decorative and exposed-aggregate concrete, they replace part of the standard aggregate so the finished surface reads as stone. Fine grades are also used in plasters, epoxy floors and resin systems.

Choosing between colours

Colour choice is mostly aesthetic, but it has practical consequences. Light colours brighten spaces and stay cooler outdoors but show soil sooner. Dark colours hide dirt and give contrast but absorb heat. Warm colours such as yellow and brown are the most forgiving in dusty outdoor conditions.
