Best Marble Chip Size for Landscaping

Beds, paths and driveways each want a different chip grade. Here is what to use where.
Garden beds and borders: 8-10 mm
For decorative beds, 8-10 mm is the default. It covers ground evenly, reads clearly as stone, spreads easily by hand and stays reasonably comfortable if someone steps into the bed. Lay it around 40-50 mm deep over a weed membrane.
Walked paths: 10-20 mm
Paths need chips that interlock. A wide band such as 10-20 mm has a mix of sizes that lock together and resist scattering. Single-size fine chips shift under foot and end up on the lawn. Use edging strips on both sides to hold the line.
Driveways: 20-40 mm
For light-vehicle driveways, 20-40 mm resists displacement from turning wheels. The critical factor is the sub-base, not the chip — a compacted base with edge restraint is what stops rutting. Confirm the build-up with your contractor.
How much material to order
Multiply area by depth to get volume. A 10 square metre bed at 50 mm deep needs about 0.5 cubic metres of chips. Convert to weight using the density figure for your material, and add a small allowance for settlement and top-up.
