Mosaic flooring is still one of the most durable floors available in India. Chip choice drives how it looks.
Grades used in mosaic work
3-6 mm and 5-8 mm are the standard grades. A finer fraction is often added to close the matrix and reduce pinholes after grinding.
Colour bands and borders
Traditional mosaic floors often use a field colour with contrasting borders. Order banding colours in matched lots — natural stone varies enough between batches to show a visible tonal break in a continuous border.
Matrix consistency matters
Variations in water-cement ratio across a floor show up as tonal patches after grinding, regardless of chip quality. Consistent batching does more for the final appearance than any chip decision.
A floor that can be renewed
Unlike tile, a mosaic floor can be re-ground and re-polished decades later. That renewability is the strongest argument for specifying it in institutional and long-life buildings.
