Marble Chips for Exposed Aggregate Concrete

Exposed aggregate turns the chip into the wearing surface. Grade choice and retarder timing decide the result.
How the finish works
A surface retarder delays the set of the top cement skin. Once the concrete below has hardened, the skin is washed off, revealing the aggregate beneath. Marble chips replace or supplement the usual aggregate so the exposed face is decorative rather than grey.
Which grades expose cleanly
6-8 mm and 8-10 mm are the usual choices. Uniform grades give a more consistent pattern than wide bands. Very large chips can loosen if exposure goes too deep; very fine chips barely read once the skin is removed.
Trial panel first
Retarder strength, weather and washing timing all shift the depth of exposure. Cast a trial panel on site with the same mix, chips and crew before committing to a large pour.
Structural responsibility
Chip selection is a finish decision. Mix design, strength and durability requirements remain with your structural engineer, particularly where aggregate is being substituted.
