How to Clean Marble Chips

Last reviewed 2026-03-04 · MarbleChips.in product team

Chips discolour from soil, not from fading. Most of that comes off with the right approach.

Start by raking

Most visible dirt is leaf litter and dust sitting on top. Raking lifts debris out and turns the layer over so cleaner chips come to the surface. Do this before reaching for water.

Rinsing

A hose or low-pressure wash removes surface soil. Work in sections and let the water drain away rather than pooling, so silt does not simply resettle in the same place.

Heavily soiled areas

Where soil has worked up from below, the only real fix is to lift the chips, wash them in batches, lay or repair the membrane, and relay. This is also the moment to top up with fresh material.

What to avoid

Avoid strong acids. Marble is calcareous and acidic cleaners will etch the stone surface, leaving a dull finish that no amount of rinsing restores. If you plan to use any chemical cleaner, test it on a small handful first.
