Understanding how chips are made explains why size bands are ranges rather than exact dimensions.
Source material
Chips are commonly produced from marble offcuts and process waste generated when blocks are cut into slabs. Using this material productively is one reason chips remain economical compared with purpose-quarried stone.
Crushing and screening
The stone is crushed and then passed over vibrating screens with defined mesh sizes. Material is separated into bands — under 3 mm, 3-6 mm, 8-10 mm and so on. Because screening sorts by whether a piece passes through a mesh, some out-of-band material is always present.
Washing and drying
Washing removes stone dust, which matters for resin, epoxy and display applications. Drying is a separate step required by most resin systems. Neither is universal, so specify it if your application needs it.
Packing
Chips are typically supplied in woven bags for smaller quantities and loose or in jumbo bags for bulk. The right choice depends on your handling capability at site as much as on the order size.
