Fine vs Coarse Marble Chips

Fine and coarse chips are not interchangeable. Each solves problems the other creates.
What counts as fine and coarse
Broadly: fine is under 3 mm, medium is 3-8 mm, and coarse is 8 mm and above. The boundaries are conventions rather than standards, so always quote the actual band.
Where fine wins
Thin systems — epoxy, resin, plaster — can only accommodate fine aggregate. Fine chips also fill the matrix densely in terrazzo, reducing visible gaps after grinding.
Where coarse wins
Any loose outdoor surface. Coarse chips stay put, drain freely and read clearly from standing height. Fine chips in an open bed wash away in the first heavy rain.
Blending grades
Many good results come from a blend: a coarse chip for character with a finer fraction to close the surface. Discuss the ratio with your contractor before ordering, so quantities of each grade are right.
