What drives marble chip demand in Kolkata

Older Kolkata buildings across the central and southern neighbourhoods have mosaic and terrazzo floors, and much of the city's current chip demand comes from repairing, extending or replacing them. Repair work needs a chip grade and colour that reasonably matches what is already down, which is why buyers here often ask about matching before they ask about price.

New apartment construction in Rajarhat, New Town, EM Bypass, Behala and the southern suburbs is the second driver. Lobbies, staircases and common corridors in these buildings use terrazzo tiles and chip-set concrete for durability.

Institutional and commercial refurbishment forms the third stream: hospitals, colleges, offices and retail interiors, where floors are replaced in phases while the building stays in use, favouring cast tiles and resin systems that go down quickly.

Colours that suit Kolkata projects

White and off-white are the traditional field colours for Kolkata mosaic flooring, usually with black or red borders. That combination is so established in the city's older buildings that repair work often has to match it, and it remains the default for new cast tiles as well.

Outdoors, Kolkata's humidity is the deciding factor. Surfaces stay damp for long stretches during and after the monsoon, and biological growth shows quickly on pale stone in shade. Grey, black, brown and multicolor stay presentable far longer in open beds and courtyards.
