How marble chips are manufactured

Marble chips begin as block offcuts, slab edges and quarry waste from marble processing. That feedstock is sorted by colour before crushing, because once mixed it cannot be separated again. Sorting is the stage that decides whether a white lot is genuinely white or carries grey and beige pieces that will show up in a ground terrazzo panel.

Crushing is normally done in stages. A primary crusher reduces the feed to a manageable size, and a secondary crusher brings it down to the target band. The type of crusher influences particle shape: impact crushing tends to produce more cubical chips, while jaw crushing leaves more flaky and elongated pieces. Shape matters more than buyers expect — cubical chips pack and grind more predictably in terrazzo, while flaky pieces create voids and uneven exposure.

Screening then separates the crushed material into nominal bands using vibrating decks. No screen is perfect. A 3-6 mm band will always contain a small proportion of pieces slightly above and below the stated size, and any producer claiming absolute uniformity is describing a laboratory rather than a plant. What a good producer controls is how narrow that tolerance is and how little dust is left behind.

Washing is the final optional stage. Passing the screened chips through water removes the fine marble dust that coats every freshly crushed surface. Washed chips show their true colour, bond better in cementitious mixes and present far better in packaging. Unwashed material is cheaper and perfectly adequate where the chips are buried in a mix or covered later.

What separates a good production lot from a poor one

Four things distinguish lots at the same nominal grade and colour: colour sorting discipline at the feedstock stage, screening tolerance, dust and fines content, and moisture at packing. Poor sorting shows as off-tone pieces scattered through the lot. Loose screening shows as oversize that jams a terrazzo trowel or undersize that fills voids you wanted open. High fines content means you are paying stone rates for dust. Excess moisture inflates the weight you are billed for and cakes the material in the bag.

None of these are visible from a rate sheet, which is why sample approval before a large order is standard practice. Ask for a sample drawn from the lot that will actually be dispatched, not a showroom sample, and keep a retained portion so the delivered material can be checked against what was approved.

• Is the material washed or unwashed?
• What screening tolerance is normal for this grade at your plant?
• How much of the lot falls outside the nominal band?
• Is the whole quantity coming from one production run?
• How is it packed, and what is the moisture level at packing?
• Can a sample be drawn from the dispatch lot before loading?

Manufacturing capability and honest limits

Colour availability in marble chips is set by what the marble processing belt produces, not by demand. White and grey are abundant because so much white and grey marble is cut. Strong greens, reds and pinks depend on specific quarries and are produced in smaller, less continuous volumes, which is why they are often available in a narrower range of size bands and at longer notice.

Specifying a production order

A production enquiry is answered fastest when it reads like a specification rather than a request. State the colour, the size band, whether washed material is required, the total tonnage, the packing format, the delivery destination and the date the material is needed on site. If the chips feed a mix design, say so and quote the relevant clause — it changes which tolerances matter.
