Exporting marble chips from India

India is a major source of crushed marble because of the volume of marble processed domestically — the chips are produced from the same belt that supplies slabs and tiles. Overseas buyers typically source here for the colour range and the availability of consistent mid-grade material in container quantities, particularly white, grey and black.

An export order is planned around the container rather than around the truck. Marble chips are dense, so a twenty-foot container reaches its weight limit long before it fills visually. Plan on weight, confirm the permitted payload for the route and port, and never assume a load can be topped up to fill the space.

Packing for sea freight

Packing choices for export are driven by moisture and by handling at the destination. Woven bags on pallets, shrink-wrapped, are the common format and suit destinations where the buyer breaks the load down for resale. Jumbo bags suit industrial consumers with mechanical handling. Loose bulk in a lined container is possible for the largest consignments but shifts all the handling burden to the discharge point.

Moisture is the main technical risk in a sea container. Stone loaded damp will release water during the voyage, condensation forms on the container roof and rains back onto the cargo, and bags arrive stained, caked or mouldy at the liner. Material should be dried before packing, and liners or desiccant used where the route crosses significant temperature changes.

Lot consistency across shipments

Where a buyer is reselling the material or feeding it into a finished product, tone consistency between shipments matters more than anything on the commercial invoice. Crushed natural stone shifts slightly between production runs, so a repeat order months later will rarely be an exact match to the first. The practical answers are to order larger quantities against one lot, to retain an approved sample for reference, and to tell your own customers honestly that natural stone varies.
